PokerStars player eyes SCOOP for charity fundraising

scoop2009_thn.gifBy now you know the Spring Championship of Online Poker is going to kick off in a couple of weeks. We’ve recently learned about a poker player who is planning to play Event #31 with the idea of giving away everything he earns. What’s more, he’s hoping you can help him in the effort. Read below to learn more

by Rick “lostsoul311″ Blumenthal

Poker Players Unite Against Tay-Sachs Disease started after a dear friend of mine lost her young nephew to Tay-Sachs disease the day of Event #4 of the WBCOOP. I dedicated that event to him, and went on to finish in the top 120 for a $11 SCOOP ticket. After the event, I decided I wanted to help out a good cause, and decided that my poker background would give me a way to do just that.

I am working closely with the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association, Inc. and one of their local chapters here in Pennsylvania. My mission is to raise awareness to this progressive neurological genetic disorder, and to also raise money by holding poker events both live and online. I hope to watch these grow from local/online events to national events that attract thousands of people year after year.

The first event that I have been working on is during Pokerstars SCOOP tournament on Sunday May 16, 2010 at 13:00pm. I have decided to play in Event #31- $22 NL Hold’em [6-max] $200k gtd prize pool. All winnings will be donated straight to NTSAD. I am also trying to get at least 1000 people to pledge $1 for each break level I reach. Bigger donations will always be welcomed, but I understand that times are tough for everyone right now. If you are interested, please contact me at the email below!

I have set up a fund raising website that is directly linked to NTSAD. Please go to http://www.firstgiving.com/ppuatsd. It is 100% Verisign secured.

If you do not feel comfortable donating from my page, please go to NTSAD.org for more donation information (if you send a check, please include ppuatsd in the memo so we can track everything). Donations to NTSAD are tax deductable for U.S. residents.

Want to follow my progress? I will be doing live blog updates at http://www.ppuatsd.blogspot.com or you can watch me live by downloading the PokerStars software.

My screen name there is Lostsoul311.

Please feel free to contact me at ericb.ppuatsd@yahoo.com with any questions or concerns you might have. You can also contact NTSAD at 1-800-906-8723 to verify that this is legit.

Together we can make a difference!

PCA ready to support amfAR charity

PCA-2010-thumbnail.jpgThe PokerStars Caribbean Adventure has spent years awarding millions of dollars to it winners. Now, the PCA and its players are set to give something back.

PokerStars has long been a supporter of AIDS research charities. Going back several years, PokerStars has been a proud supporter of the AIDS fundraising Lifeball event. Now, PokerStars has teamed up with AIDS research charity amfAR to host a charity tournament during this year’s PCA to raise money for HIV/AIDS awareness and research. The $5,250 buy-in tournament will donate half the prize pool to amfAR.

Players expected to show up include NHL Olympic gold medalist Mats Sundin, tennis legend Boris Becker, French rugby star Sebastien Chabal, and members of Team PokerStars Pro.

PokerStars is giving its players a chance to play with the stars and raise some money for amfAR. PokerStars has already given away a few seats to the event in recent weeks. Players in the U.S. and Canada have one more chance to get a seat in this star-studded tournament. Sunday December 13 at 16:00, PokerStars will host a $5.50 tournament that awards prize packages to the top two finishers.

Also, of you’re headed out to the PCA, keep your eyes open for ways you can donate to amfAR during the week in paradise.

Good luck to those trying to win a seat. We hope to see you in the Bahamas in a few weeks.
